Kirnu CreamĬableguys are best known for their ShaperBox 2 multi-effects plugin, which uses an endlessly manipulable freeform LFO to define the modulation of a range of multiband audio signal processors. An indispensable plugin for instant conjuration of musically compelling chords and sequences. The Arp module, meanwhile, is far more well-endowed than the average arpeggiator, with a wide range of available note selections per step, and step-based modulation of transposition, velocity, gate time and more taking it well into full-on step sequencer territory. The Chords module assigns banks of preset and/or user-created chords to individual MIDI notes, making it easy to string together ear-catching progressions with single-note input. Named after HP Lovecraft’s fictional ocean-bedded deity (we know not why), Cthulhu is, in the simplest terms, a chord generator and arpeggiator – but, of course, there’s far more to it than just that. Before the mighty Serum elevated them to the top table of soft synth development, Steve Duda’s Xfer Records were best known for their LFO Tool and Cthulhu MIDI plugins, the former a modulation source along the lines of MidiShaper (see below), the latter an bottomless wellspring of melodic and harmonic inspiration.
